Vibrams aren't really any different to train in socks from a health and safety point of view yet gyms would definitely allow one over the other. They definitely won't cushion the blow if you drop a weight on your foot lol.I would happily use them for deadlifting (and have done) but personally don't use them for squatting. I squat with an olympic style and definitely appreciate some extra dorsiflexion from having a raised heel.
There's potential to slip when you just have socks on though. At least the rubber sole on the vibrams can help with that.
I use vibrams for my lifts and love them. I do have to fiddle around for a few seconds to get my little toes in but once in place they are very comfortable.
I squat with a low bar style as I just find it more comfortable on my back.
