A lot strongman athletes seem to have big biceps as do gymnasts but many natural bodybuilders who do tons of direct arm work don't. Is arm work over rated for arm size gains?

Has anyone gained as well just doing heavy pulling work?

One thing to keep in mind when looking at biceps of gymnasts and strongmen is their genetics. You’re looking at several dozen people that have the perfect genetic makeup for great arms. Unfortunately, not all of us got those genes, but we still do the best we can. Also, you should remember that about two-thirds of the size of your upper arm is made up of the triceps, with only one-third biceps. Given this ratio difference, to truly have exceptional biceps requires a great deal of training, focus and dietary commitment. I have not tried doing only heavy pulling work, but I also wouldn’t recommend it if you’re trying to build bigger and better defined biceps.
