I trained under Mentzer when he was alive, so have some insight...
HIT is superb IF your goal is max strength. You will see growth, but only transiently if coming off of a volume phase or have been over-training. Generally speaking, HIT strength gains FAR outstrip gains in mass/hypertrophy.
For that, I highly suggest looking into Charles Staley's EDT (Escalating Density Training). We know the physiological trigger for muscle growth is overload. There are many ways to go about this, but IMO total tonnage lifted per unit of time is optimal. Staley does a brilliant job adding the critical component of DENSITY to the equation.
EXAMPLE:
10,000lbs lifted in 10 minutes start to finish = 1,000lbs per minute. That figure is an objective diagnostic of the amount of "overload" you demanded of your muscles. The next time you repeat this workout, you MUST arrive at a figure exceeding 1,000lbs per minute. To wit, imagine the following conversation among your muscles taking place outside your body...
"Hey, this guy asked us to lift 1,000lbs per minute last week. This week, he's asking us to lift 1,500lbs/minute! We better go get some friends...".
That's how muscles grow...
